Hwa Chong says it did not reprimand or penalise students who spoke about controversial canteen meals
In a statement on Thursday, the school said it supports student feedback and dialogue, and emphasised that no demerit points or disciplinary actions were issued in relation to comments made by pupils about the quality of food served in the institution’s canteens.
The clarification comes after a social media post claimed that some students had been punished for raising issues about meal portions and options. Hwa Chong said the matter was addressed through appropriate channels and that discussions between students and staff focused on constructive feedback rather than discipline.
“The school encourages open communication and values student voice,” the statement read, noting that concerns about food services were taken seriously and examined with relevant stakeholders to improve the dining experience.
Hwa Chong also reiterated that its disciplinary framework is applied fairly and consistently, and that students exercising responsible expression of views are not subject to punitive measures. The school encouraged parents and students to approach staff with any concerns for resolution
