Salaries of political office holders to be reviewed: Chan Chun Sing
Speaking after a regular Cabinet meeting, Mr Chan emphasised that the review aims to strike a balance between compensating leaders fairly and maintaining public confidence in the remuneration framework. He noted that Singapore’s approach to political office salaries has always been rooted in the principles of meritocracy and accountability.
“Regular reviews are necessary,” Mr Chan said. “They help ensure that remuneration remains relevant to the evolving responsibilities of public office and to the expectations of our people.”
Details of the review process, including its timeline and scope, will be finalised in due course. Mr Chan reassured the public that any adjustments will be guided by rigorous analysis and broad consultation, taking into account the economic climate and national priorities.
The salaries of political office holders in Singapore are periodically reviewed by an independent committee. The last comprehensive review was conducted several years ago, and adjustments were implemented following recommendations aimed at narrowing the gap between public and private sector earnings while continuing to attract talented individuals to public service.
Mr Chan’s remarks come amid wider discussion about public sector wages, inflationary pressures and the recruitment and retention of top talent within government. Analysts have said that well-structured remuneration helps promote good governance by reducing the risk of conflicts of interest and encouraging long-term commitment to public service.
The review is expected to begin in the coming months, and the Government has indicated that its findings will be made public once the process is completed.
